Community Based Rehabilitation Programme :

It is generally considered that 2% of the population constitutes persons with mental retardation. However,  no  systematic national survey has been conducted to determine the prevalence of mental retardation in India. Recently it has been estimated that in India, there are about 20 million persons who are mildly retarded and about 4 million persons who are moderately and severely retarded.

Most of the habilitation services for the mentally handicapped are concentrated in the urban area. 75% of population of the country lives in rural areas and practically no service exists there for the habilitation of rural disabled.

The Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children, Chandigarh took courage to answer there problems by starting community based rehabilitation programme in Khuda Lahora and Kajheri,U.T. Chandigarh. Ten mentally retarded children of Khuda Lahora and seventeen mentally retarded children of Kajehri are included in Community based Rehabilitation Programme.
