Physio-Occupation Therapy

As Occupational Therapy section already has been running since 2000 in G.I.M.R.C, along with it, physiotherapy section also started in this Institute since 2005. At present one occupational therapist and one physiotherapist are providing their services for the benefit of children

Physio-Occupation Therapy is a type of treatment carried out through the medium of physical means such as heat, electronic machines , exercise,various equipments etc.to rehabilitate them. Occupation Therapy and physiotherapy plays a good role in all fields of medical science-medicine surgery, orthopedics, neurology  as well as physical fitness and plays an important role in mental retardation (MR). Persons with MR always delay in Motor development. Health wise also they are likely to be weak and so many physical problems are associated like - Cerebral Palsy, Muscular dystrophy, Contractures & deformities since birth , Muscular weakness & Poor Co-ordination and poor hand functions.

Therapies are given to improve the various aspects i.e

1. Neuro muscular skeleton component

2. Motor skills

3. Cognitive skills

4. ADL Training

5. Social Skills

6. Sensory motor component

7. Aids & appliances

 

To deal with such type of problems. regular Physio Occupational Therapy services are provided in GIMRC. There are 263 children in GIMRC out of them 100 students are associated the physical problems and therapy is provided according to their need. Nearly 30-40 cases in a month for assessment, 6-8 O.P.D cases and 14-15 school children daily come for therapy.

Daily assessment is required for providing disability certificate and side by side for the children at long distances, therapy plane is given for home and advised them for follow up weekly or quarterly.

For the small children from 0-6yrs of age the day is fixed in which all specialist sits together and do the combined assessment and according to their needs different types of therapy is provided as earlier as possible.

General Aims/objectives:-

1. Maintaining or improving mobility in joints

3. Preventing contracture & deformities

4. To stimulate milestones

5. To enhance hand movements for Gross motor & Fine movement

6. To enhance independent skills in the person (A.D.L)

7. To improve muscle co-ordination

8. To correct posture

9. Providing splints and different aids & appliances

One big room is provided for the therapy with different exercises equipments i.e shoulder Wheel, cycling, Rowing Machine, Jogger, Muscle Stimulator etc.

The therapy provided for out door cases from 8.00 to 11.00 A.M in the morning after that the school children comes for regular exercise according to their needs.

From the year 2002 app. 600 cases has been assessed till date and accordingly exercise therapy has started. Daily 4-5 cases come for therapy in the morning however rest of the day is for school children who needs therapy.

The cases who comes from long distances the therapy plan is given to them to do it at home and monthly they are advised to come in the OPD

The chronic cases in which any type of surgery is required e.g stiffness, contractures, are advised to consult in Govt. Medical College & Hospital Sec-32,Chandigarh regarding surgery. Post operative exercise therapy is also provided in GIMRC to make them independent.

A substantial number of cases have become independent,after intervention from the section.
