Diploma in Vocational Rehabilitation (Mental Retardation)
ABOUT
THE COURSE
1.
INTRODUCTION
The course will
prepare the trainees to work as vocational instructor in wide variety of vocational
training and employment situations like vocational training centres, production centres,
vocational rehabilitation centres, Community based rehabilitation programmes and special
schools having facilities of vocational training. The course prepares the trainees to
(a) Identify jobs suitable
for persons with mental retardation in urban and rural areas,
(b) Organize vocational
training programmes,
(c) Enable appropriate
placement of persons with mental retardation and
(d) To provide follow up support
in individual and group employment settings, in self employment, open competitive
employment settings, in self employment, open competitive employment and sheltered
workshops.
This is a new
course started by GIMRC from the academic year 2003-04 where in 55% of the inputs are
towards 4 practicals and 45% inputs are towards 6 theory papers. The one academic
year course is designed to develop the following competencies in the trainees.

Identify and assess the readiness of
mentally retarded persons to be vocationally trained and employed.

Develop appropriate work behavior in
the mentally retarded persons.
·
Manage behavior problems.
·
Develop work skills and to assess
them.
·
Be conversant with task analysis and
job simplification.
·
Set up appropriate work situations.
·
Manage an employment facility for
the mentally retarded persons.
·
Counsel the mentally retarded
persons, care givers and society.
·
Assist and set up vocational
training and employment facilities for the mentally retarded persons.
2. Objectives
2.1
General Objectives
The general objectives of this course are to
provide services of vocational training and employment suitable to the persons with mental
retardation.
To enable the trainee
to acquire basic knowledge and competence to conduct vocational training, identify design
and create appropriate work environments for the mentally retarded persons.
To apply science and
technology to the development of most productive work environments.
To acquire the basic
managerial skills to organize and administer a work environment for the mentally retarded
persons.
To provide adequate
practical knowledge and skills to effectively carry out the roles for which they have been
trained.
3. Eligibility
The candidate should
have passed or appeared for 10 + 2 examination from a recognized board/university
Preference will be
give to candidates with engineering subject in the vocational stream or with science in
the academic stream.
Candidates with a
basic qualification in mental retardation (DSE) (MR)/BMR/B.Ed-Spl. Edn.) will also qualify
for admission.

5. Selection
Applications for admission will be screened
by a committee specially constituted for this purpose. Merit list based on the academic
qualification as per rules will be prepared. Final merit list will be prepared based on
the scores obtained by the candidates on the basis of academic qualification, experience
and performance in the interview. No TA/DA will be
paid by the Institute for attending the interview.
Selected candidates should join the course by
the stipulated date. At the time of joining the course, the selected candidates will have
to produce, a) A bond to the effect that the admitted candidates will not discontinue the
course and b) Medical certificate of fitness from medical board declaring the candidate
medically fit.
The total numbers of seats are twenty five
(25), one seat is reserved for NRI. Following will be distribution of seats:
70% of total sanctioned intake of the seats
will be filled from amongst the students who pass their qualifying examination from
schools recognized by Chandigarh Administration and situated in the Union Territory as a
regular students of the said school subject to the condition that such students must have
been studying for two years in Chandigarh and have passed one lower qualifying examination
(10+1) from these schools (enclose proof).
The remaining 30 % seats will be filled from
amongst the students who pass their qualifying examination from the Institution other than
those located in the Union Territory, Chandigarh or otherwise. These seats will be termed
as Non UT Pool
One seat is reserved for NRI candidate.

One academic year comprising 42 weeks, 6 days
a week. 6 hours per day on weekdays from Monday to Saturday. In other words the duration
of the course is of 10 Months consisting of 220 working days
Delivery of lectures will be in English only.
However candidates will be allowed to write Final Exam in English, Hindi or Punjabi only.

will be offered. The curriculum content may be revised as per the directions of
Rehabilitation Council of India, syllabus of theory and practical is given below.

12. Examination
There will be two term examinations; and at
the end of the academic years the trainees will appear in the final examination. There
will be 6 papers in theory and
4 papers in practical. 80% of the attendance is compulsory to appear in the final
examination. Candidates will be deemed to have failed in the examination if they score
less than 40% in any paper of term and final examination.
There is no Hostel accommodation available in
the Institute. The admitted students will have to make their own arrangements for stay.
