Diploma in Vocational Rehabilitation (M.R.)
This is the only one institute in North India approved by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) to run this diploma. Diploma in Vocational Rehabilitation (M.R.) is a one year diploma course to train the candidate having 10+2 qualification. It is a prestigious diploma in the field of mental retardation. It prepares the trainees to work as vocational instructor in vide variety of vocational Rehabilitation situations like vocational training centers, production centers, vocational rehabilitation centers, community based rehabilitation programme and special schools having facilities of vocational training. Provide services of Vocational rehabilitation & adult Independent living skills for Person with mental retardation.
Identify jobs suitable for person with mental retardation in urban and rural areas.
Organize vocational training programme.
Provide follow up support to individual and group employment setting in self employment, open employment and sheltered workshop employment situations.
Candidates are admitted to this institute purely on merit basis.
Admission Criteria
a. Educational Qualification : 60 marks
b. Weight-age for candidates of Science/Engineering streams : 10 marks
c. Weight-age for experience/sponsored candidates : 05 marks
d. Parents/siblings of persons with mental retardation : 05 marks
e. Interview : 20 marks
Total : 100 marks
Selection
Applications for admission are screened by a committee specially constituted for this purpose. Merit list based on the academic qualification is prepared. Final merit list is prepared based on the scores obtained by the candidates on the basis of academic qualification, experience and performance in the interview. No TA/DA is paid by the institute for attending the interview.
Joining and submission of Certificates
Selected candidates should join the course by the stipulated date. At the time of joining the course, the selected candidates will have to produce :-
A bond to the effect that the admitted candidates will not discontinue the course
Medical Certificate of fitness from the medical board declaring that the candidate is medically fit.

Duration of Course
One academic year comprising 42 weeks, 6 days a week. 8 hours per day on weekdays from Monday to Friday and 4 hours on Saturday. In other words the duration of the course is of 10 months comprising of 220 working days.
Medium of Instruction
Delivery of lectures will be in English only. However candidates will be allowed to write Final Examination in English, Hindi or Punjabi.
Course Content
The following theory and practical papers will be offered. The curriculum content may be revised as per the directions of Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Syllabus of theory and practical is given below :-

Individualized Vocational training Programme.

Market survey, Job analysis & trades Training
Development of Adaptive devices & Teaching Learning Material.
Examination
There will be two term examinations,on the month of October and january and at the end of the academic year the trainees will appear in the final year examination. There will be six papers in theory and four papers in practical. 80% of the attendance is compulsory to appear in the final examination.
Award of Diploma
Based on the performance in the annual examination and during the course, the successful candidates will be awarded Diploma in Vocational Rehabilitation (MR). Minimum marks for passing the examinations will be 40% in each paper. Candidates scoring 70% and above will be awarded Diploma with Distinction. Candidates will be deemed to have failed in the examination if they score less than 40% marks in any paper.
The unsuccessful candidates will be allowed to re-appear only in theory examination upto three attempts to complete the course. If a candidate has failed in any of the practical examination, he/she will be required to appear in all the theory and practical papers again.
Faculty
The core faculty will be from the Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children. Competent guest faculty with experience will be arranged as per requirements of the topics given in the syllabus.

The fee will be collected in two installments.
Hostel Accommodation
Hostel Accommodation to outstation candidates will be provided at GIMRC, Chandigarh subject to availability on first come first serve basis. Boarding charges will have to be borne by the trainees themselves. The trainees will have to pay expenditure on water and electricity fixed by the authorities of GIMRC.
Job Opportunities
The successful candidates will be suitable for placement as vocational instructors. Job opportunities are predominately available in voluntary organizations & in Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan. It is estimated that out of all Special Schools / Instructions for persons with mental retardation, 1/3 of them have vocational training facilities. In recent years, vocational training cum group employment centres have been established. Another recent trend has been to seek employment of persons with mental retardation in supported and open job situations. The vocational Rehabilitation for persons with mental retardation is an emerging area.
